A biomechanical exam looks at how your feet, ankles, knees and hips are built and how they move. A gait analysis looks at how you walk. At WellCare Medical in Bradford, our chiropractor does both in the same visit. Together they show whether custom orthotics are likely to help, and what your orthotics need to do.

Who should book one
- anyone with ongoing heel or arch pain
- people with flat feet or high arches that cause pain or tired legs
- people with knee or lower back pain that is worse with standing and walking
- people whose shoes wear unevenly
- parents who are concerned about the way a child walks
- anyone whose benefit plan asks for an exam before it pays for orthotics
What happens at the exam
- Your history. The chiropractor asks about your pain, your work, your activities and the shoes you wear.
- Your feet at rest. Your feet are examined while you sit and while you stand: the height of the arch, the position of the heel and the movement in the joints of the foot and ankle.
- Alignment. The chiropractor checks how your ankles, knees and hips line up, and compares one side with the other.
- Your gait. You walk while the chiropractor watches how each foot lands, rolls and pushes off.
- Your shoes. The wear on the soles shows where the pressure goes.
- Measuring. If orthotics are right for you, the chiropractor takes the measurements they will be made from.
Nothing in the exam is painful.
What to bring and wear
- shorts, or trousers you can roll up above the knee
- the shoes you wear most, and any sports or work shoes you want orthotics for
- any orthotics or insoles you already use
- a referral or prescription from your family doctor, if you have one
- your benefits card
After the exam
The chiropractor explains what was found and whether orthotics are likely to help. If they are, your prescription is written and your orthotics are made. They are ready in around three weeks, depending on the case, and you come back for a fitting.

Common questions about gait analysis
Does a gait analysis hurt?
No. You stand, sit and walk while the chiropractor examines and watches.
Do I need a referral for a gait analysis?
You can book the exam without one. A family doctor's referral is recommended if you plan to claim orthotics on your benefits, because some plans ask for it.
Can children have a gait analysis?
Yes. We see children as well as adults. See children's orthotics.
Is the gait analysis included in the price of orthotics?
Yes. The $500 price of a pair of custom orthotics includes the biomechanical exam, the gait analysis, the measuring and the fitting.
